How to Deep Clean Your Kitchen

Your kitchen is one of the most frequently used rooms in your apartment, so a thorough deep clean should be done at least twice a year.

Start your cleaning with the dirtiest areas first to avoid spreading the mess to clean areas.

Cleaning your oven

The night before you plan on cleaning your kitchen, spray your oven with oven cleaner and allow it to work overnight. Then on cleaning day, let the oven cleaner continue to soak while you clean the exterior of the stove. Clean the knobs, burner plates, and the oven drawer and don't forget to clean any other surfaces that will collect dust and oils. Finish by wiping away the oven cleaner from inside the oven.

Cleaning your food storage

A deep clean of your fridge should include a thorough interior clean of the shelves, door compartments, and drawers. When finished, clean the exterior and move the unit away from the wall to clean beneath it. Before you put your fridge back in place, vacuum the coils and wipe away any standing dust.

Next, you should clean out your cupboards. Start by emptying them one at a time, while wiping down the inside, then clean the handles and doors. Before putting any food back in the cupboard, toss out anything that has expired and organize the space to suit your needs.

Cleaning Small Appliances

Small appliances like toasters and coffee makers should be cleaned next. When in doubt, check the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning instructions for these items. Make sure you empty any crumb catchers on toasters, and be sure to run a vinegar/water mixture through your coffee machine.

Clean any storage containers that sit on your counters and the utensil caddy in your drawer, if you have one. Clear off your countertops and scrub with soap and water, wipe clean, then spray with a disinfectant.

Cleaning your windows and floors

If you have a window in your kitchen, don't forget to clean it. The window pane, the ledge, and the window track all accumulate a lot of dirt, so they'll all need a deep clean.  Remove the blinds and clean in the tub or wash the curtains in the washing machine. Next, scrub your sinks and faucets with soap and water, rinse, and, if necessary, use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to bring back a nice shine to your sinks. Disinfect the sinks and faucet once clean. Finally, wash the rugs in the kitchen and finish by washing the floor.
