It's that time of year again!
Winter street parking is a 'no-no' for both Aurora and Sault Ste. Marie city residents.
With snow upon us in the next couple weeks, it's important to know when you can and can't park on city streets. While a pilot program last year allowed Aurora car owners to park on city streets overnight during the winter, the City of Aurora has discontinued that program for this season.
All parking bans are in effect, even if there is no snow on the ground, or if the plows have already gone by.
Aurora
Starting November 15th until April 15th, residents cannot leave any motor vehicles on the street between 2am - 6am.
This will allow plows to clear snow without obstruction in time for 7:30am, when commuters are heading out to work.
Sault Ste. Marie
Starting Nov 1 until April 30, no parking is allowed by any vehicle type, on city streets. The ban is in effect from midnight - 6am.
Fines can be given ($15) or your vehicle could be towed (expensive!).
Practice Safe Driving in the Snow
The snow often sneaks up on us and we're not ready! Make sure you follow these great tips to help you prepare for Winter driving:
- Get your snow tires on stat! The time is now - put on or purchase snow tires before we get hit with the first storm of the season. Winter weather can be unpredictable and you'll appreciate your tires gripping the ice and snow in an unexpected snowfall.
- Put a winter emergency kit in your trunk. You never know when you'll encounter car troubles in minus zero weather. Pack extra gloves, hats, hand warmers and a blanket in case you end up stranded. Add a bag of salt and/or kitty litter and a small shovel to help get you out of an icy or snowy patch. Don't forget to include reflective tape and a flashlight, so other drivers can see you.
- When in doubt, don't drive. If the weather takes a turn for the worse and roads are deemed unsafe - it's not worth going out. Ask your workplace what their 'snow day' policy is (ie: work from home), plan your shopping trip for another day, or make alternate plans to stay where you are if not at home.
